Russian Japan peace treaty?

  • Share this:

Could #Russia and #Japan finally end 73 years of hostilities by signing a peace treaty?

Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested a deal "without any pre-conditions" by the end of the year to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

Russia and Japan both lay claim to a chain of islands which stretches across the Pacific Ocean.

Japan had formerly owned the islands which they call the Northern Territories, Russia took control over those islands after World War 2 and called them Kuril Islands.

The dispute over its ownership has meant that the 2 nations still haven't signed a peace treaty to end the war.
